One hundred years ago Lincoln Logs had just made their debut and teddy bears were only about a decade old. At that same time, the growing U.S. toy industry formed what is today the Toy Industry Association, celebrating its centennial this year.
TIA was launched in 1916 in New York City by a small group of toy manufacturers who believed the industry needed a group to represent its interests, according to the association. Today TIA represents 90 percent of the domestic toy industry.
"Over the last century our members have continually touched children's lives, bringing them both happiness and the developmental benefits of play, while we at TIA are proud to have supported our members every step of the way," TIA CEO Steve Pasierb said in a statement.
To put the age of the group in perspective, the debut of Mickey Mouse was more than 10 years away when the group first opened its offices. Some of today's most popular toys—Slinkys, Frisbees, hula hoops and Barbie dolls—didn't hit store shelves until decades later.
TIA reported $19 million in revenue and 62 staff on its most recent tax filings. The group's annual Toy Fair in NYC remains one of the most popular venues for toy manufacturers to debut products for the coming year.
The association has released a timeline and online book about its history to coincide with the anniversary. http://bit.ly/1tdwiKz
