American Veterinary Medical Association members will soon decide whether the organization's two top executives should themselves be veterinarians—a possible policy change coming as AVMA searches for a new leader.
AVMA bylaws currently require the association's executive vice president and assistant executive vice president both to be veterinarians. However, the AVMA House of Delegates will consider a resolution during its August meeting whether to remove that language and instead require only one of the executives to be from the profession, the Journal of AVMA reported Wednesday.
AVMA is currently searching for a new leader of the association. Current EVP Ron DeHaven announced in January he would likely retire sometime after the August meeting, although a final retirement date has not been set. He has led the Chicago-area group since 2007.
The North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association proposed the amendment, saying AVMA's current bylaws may be too restrictive given the association's board presidents, officers and district directors are all required to be vets.
"We believe that future search committees and boards of directors should not be limited in their capacity to find the most qualified candidates and elect Executive Vice Presidents and Assistant Executive Vice Presidents who are experienced, effective, and exceptional," the state association said in its proposed amendment.
AVMA's House of Delegates will meet Aug. 4-5 in San Antonio to vote on the proposal as well as other suggested amendments.
Recruitment firm Tuft and Associates is assisting AVMA in the EVP search. Among the requirements in the job listing was that candidates be both vets and AVMA members in good standing for at least five years. http://bit.ly/2acDw9Q
