One-time head of cable and wireless associations to lead commission Wheeler A longtime association CEO may soon become the nation's top telecommunications regulator. On May 1, President Obama nominated Tom Wheeler to be the next FCC chairman. Wheeler was head of the National Cable Television Association (since renamed National Cable and Telecommunications Association) from 1979-1984.
