Both senior-level association staff and executive recruiters are looking at several factors to determine which career paths and skills lead to a successful CEO placement. Is it better for CEO hopefuls to build a career in government relations or communications? When looking for a new CEO, are association boards prioritizing internal candidates or looking outside their organization? And are boards willing to consider a first-time CEO – someone who has never led an association – to steer their group?
This report provides some answers. We tracked and analyzed 113 CEO placements published in CEO Update between Oct. 1, 2023, and Sept. 30, 2024, to identify trends.

Methodology
This report captures only CEO placements at nonprofit organizations (primarily trade associations, standard-setting bodies, professional societies and public interest groups) published by CEO Update during the review period. For each placement, we documented the executive’s departing organization and job title, their arrival organization, and retirement, if applicable. We reviewed supplemental information (photos, news articles, official statements, biographies) to help identify executives’ racial/ethnic backgrounds.
