Lobbying expenses for nonprofits decline in third quarter

Spending by Grocery Manufacturers Association swells by 517 percent as the group fights Washington state ballot initiative Advocacy spending from tax-exempt organizations slipped in the third quarter of 2013, according to the latest LD-2 filings with the U.S. House of Representatives. Four of five associations and other nonprofits reported either a decline or the same lobbying expenditures for the second quarter.

Association Roundup - Nov. 1, 2013

The new head of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association announced Oct. 17 he has eliminated 12 positions at the 125-employee organization as part of a major restructuring plan. Mark Baker, who became CEO on Sept. 6, did not say which positions were eliminated. However, the group did say the association's government affairs division has been restructured "to more closely align and integrate AOPA's legislative activities with its work in the regulatory arena to allow the association to be more flexible in deploying resources."

Mining association sponsors coal rally An estimated 3,000 people attended a rally in front of Capitol Hill Tuesday to protest Obama administration policies they claim are harming the coal industry. The "Count on Coal" rally is part of a grassroots campaign by the National Mining Association "to make America aware of the benefits of affordable, reliable coal-generated electricity." More than 30 members of Congress attended the event, including Sens. Mitch McConnell (R-Ken.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.).
