Over the strong objections of many associations and nonprofits, the U.S. Senate Sept. 14 rejected an attempt to roll back a measure that would likely require some associations to file substantially more tax-related paperwork. Lobbyists representing a range of associations said they would continue to fight to rescind the new requirements, which are slated to take effect in 2012.

Replacing one political heavyweight with another, the American Council of Life Insurers has named Dirk Kempthorne, a former governor, U.S. senator and cabinet secretary, as its new CEO, effective Nov. 3, the group announced Sept. 8. Kempthorne will replace Frank Keating, a former two-term governor of Oklahoma. Keating has led ACLI since 2003.
