Search committee is looking for group's next leader

Pete Ruane, one of the longest-tenured and best-known lobbyist-CEOs in Washington, D.C., will retire from American Road & Transportation Builders Association in October. Ruane has been ARTBA's top executive since 1988.

Executive Vice President and COO William Toohey will be acting CEO after Ruane steps down. Toohey is a 33-year ARTBA veteran.

A search committee was appointed earlier this year to look for Ruane's successor. The committee is headed by David Zachry, immediate past chair of ARTBA's board and CEO of Texas-based construction firm Zachry Corporation.

"Pete's passion for ARTBA's mission and his successful leadership over the past almost three decades cannot be overstated," said ARTBA Chairman Matthew Cummings, executive vice president Americas Transportation at AECOM. "He has built ARTBA into a highly respected, formidable operation on multiple fronts—government relations, policy development, economic research and analysis, safety training and promotion. He leaves behind a powerful legacy both in Washington and the industry."

Prior to joining ARTBA, the ex-marine was CEO of the National Moving & Storage Association for nine years.

ARTBA reported revenue of nearly $17 million in 2016. Ruane's take-home pay was $1.7 million.
