Nurses who want to give up cigarettes have a new ally in the American Nurses Association, which recently announced several new resources to help them quit.
Among the new tools is a website with advice on where nurses can get support for quitting and tips for overcoming tobacco addiction. The association also has adopted a new position statement urging all pharmacies and drug stores to stop selling tobacco products.
"While many nurses have heeded the warnings and quit smoking, some continue this unhealthy habit," ANA board President Pamela Cipriano said. "Nurses know the dire consequences of smoking, which is why smoking cessation is so critical."
More than 18 percent of U.S. adults smoke cigarettes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Tobacco use is the largest cause of preventable death in the U.S., ANA noted.
