Several associations are monitoring the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus on behalf of their members as health officials in China and other nations seek to contain the disease.
The virus had reportedly killed 82 people in China as of Monday, CNN reported. The country has restricted travel in and out of several cities as a result. At least five confirmed cases of the disease have been reported in the U.S. https://cnn.it/2RZWO8O
Most U.S.-based associations are responding to the outbreak by educating members about the virus and its likely impacts on business. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce scheduled a one-hour webinar Monday with a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention official about the coronavirus and its possible effects on the private sector.
The American Medical Association published a news column on its website Jan. 23 informing doctors of five things they should know about the virus. The National Funeral Directors Association has been updating members on the most recent developments through its website. The Emergency Nurses Association released a statement Jan. 24 urging members and other medical providers to "stay vigilant in their best infectious disease screening and isolation practices as officials monitor the respiratory illness outbreak."
"Just as ED nurses do every day, we must always be alert for patients presenting with signs and symptoms consistent with infectious diseases," ENA President Mike Hastings said.
January and February are a busy time a year for trade shows, with several associations planning to hold events in coming days and weeks. So far the virus has had no effect on North American trade shows, although a cosmetics-industry trade show in Shanghai scheduled for February was pushed back a month because of concerns about spreading the disease.
