The president of the American Bar Association said Thursday that she was "deeply troubled" by statements from Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) that two conservative U.S. Supreme Court justices "will pay the price" for their ruling on a pending abortion case.

The justices on Wednesday took oral arguments on a Louisiana case involving restrictions on abortion providers. During a rally before abortion providers outside the Supreme Court, Schumer said Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch "have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price," the Washington Post reported.
"You won't know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions," he said. https://wapo.st/3cyFVLS
Schumer's comments resulted in a rare rebuke from Chief Justice John Roberts, who said the remarks were "inappropriate" and "dangerous," according to the Post. ABA President Judy Perry Martinez said in a statement she was also deeply troubled by Schumer "threatening two sitting justices of the U.S. Supreme Court over their upcoming votes in a pending case."
"Personal attacks on judges by any elected officials, including the President, are simply inappropriate," she said. "Such comments challenge the reputation of the third, co-equal branch of our government; the independence of the judiciary; and the personal safety of judicial officers. They are never acceptable. "
ABA also has criticized past remarks made President Donald Trump that the group believed threatened judicial independence, such as his attacks against prosecutors and the judge in a case involving his long-time ally Roger Stone.
