Farmers for Free Trade announced Jan. 15 that it has a new member, the Corn Refiners Association, for its campaign to get U.S. farmers, ranchers and agricultural businesses speaking out in support of free trade. FFT is co-chaired by former Senators Richard Lugar (R.-Ind.) and Max Baucus (D-Mont.), and says it is "working at the grassroots level to organize and educate farmers about the importance of trade, including through work at state commodity conventions, through state proclamations, by reaching farmers through social media, and by identifying local spokespeople." Other agriculture groups such as the American Farm Bureau Federation have signed up.

John Bode, president and CEO of the Corn Refiners Association, said that one of the group's priorities this year is Congressional ratification of the new U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. FFT is backing that too, along with potential new trade agreements with the EU, Japan and the UK, while expressing "concern over tariff policies that have reduced export opportunities for farmers, ranchers and rural communities."
Lugar said U.S. corn refiners "are among the most export-dependent groups."
