The National Shooting Sports Foundation has set its sights on the 2018 midterm elections with its first-ever congressional scorecard. The $43 million-revenue trade association for the firearms, hunting and shooting sports industries has listed where every member of Congress voted on 10 key gun issues in the 113th Congress and the 115th Congress, which is still in session until Jan. 3, 2019.
"It was clear in the last presidential election that the ability to freely exercise Second Amendment rights and fully participate in the shooting sports was a deciding factor for many voters," said Lawrence Keane, NSSF senior vice president and general counsel for government and public affairs. "Members of our industry, gun owners and sportsmen and sportswomen are strongly urged to participate in this election and should be fully informed of how their prospective members of Congress vote on the issues impacting their livelihood and recreational activities."
The scorecard is the latest foray into politics for the association, which launched the #GUNVOTE website and Twitter page in 2011. The website provides visitors with candidate bios and information on absentee voting and local polling places.
The NSSF gave perfect ratings, 100 percent, to more than 200 Republican members of the House of Representatives.
Most House Democrats received poor ratings, with the exception of Collin Peterson of Minnesota and Vicente Gonzalez of Texas, who both received 100 percent ratings for their pro-gun votes. In the Senate, 47 Republicans received perfect ratings. The highest-rated Democrats are Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, who both received ratings of 64.28 percent.
