Ralph Swoboda, who formerly led the Credit Union National Association for eight years as CEO, died Monday, the association said in a statement. A cause of death was not given.

Swoboda was president and CEO of CUNA from 1987 to 1995 as well as the associations' general counsel from 1974 to 1987. He most recently was managing director of CUFA Lending Analytics, a software solutions company based in Ireland, according to a LinkedIn profile.

"Ralph spent more than four decades working for financial cooperatives across the globe in dozens of countries, a true ambassador who represented the best of what credit unions can do," current CUNA CEO Jim Nussle said in a statement. "He was a strong champion for credit unions, particularly in the legal arena, and helped shape the movement into what it is today."

Following his tenure as CEO, Swoboda worked as head of international operations for CUNA Mutual Group, directing operations in 30 countries from China to the Caribbean. He also founded, and later served as board chair, of CUNA Mortgage Corporation.
