An association representing veterinarians wants mining companies and the oil and gas industry to minimize the impacts of their activities on animals and to be transparent about what they are doing to protect the environment.
The American Veterinary Medical Association's board of directors has amended an existing policy on extractive industries to include new language emphasizing the group's support for environmental stewardship, according to an item published online Thursday in JAVMA News. The previous policy had simply supported scientific research into the effects mining and drilling have on animals and the environment. The revised policy urges industry players to adopt practices to minimize negative impacts on animals, humans and the environment as well as be transparent about what steps they are taking.
The AVMA Committee on Environmental Issues had recommended strengthening the policy. "The committee believes that it is appropriate for the AVMA to weigh in when evidence suggests that the conduct of human activities is impacting the health and welfare of animals." http://bit.ly/37rHGa8
