Group credits CEO for growth in membership, member engagement

Peter Larkin will retire as CEO of the National Grocers Association at the end of 2019, ending what by then will have been a nearly decade-long career at the group.

Larkin became CEO of the $7.2M-revenue NGA in 2010. In a statement about his departure, the association credited Larkin's leadership with doubling its membership among retailers and wholesalers as well as driving greater member engagement.

"Peter has led a renaissance of NGA and will be leaving an organization that is well prepared to support our industry for many years to come," said Cheryl Sommer, chair of NGA's board of directors.

Larkin is the former CEO of the California Grocers Association and vice president of the Food Marketing Institute. Immediately before joining NGA, the CEO ran his own public affairs firm. He has a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Vermont.

The board of directors plans to form a search committee in January to find Larkin's successor.
