Banking leader "outraged" over NRF letter Independent Community Bankers of America CEO Camden Fine expressed "shock and outrage" Wednesday over a National Retail Federation letter he said blames the recent data security lapses at Target and Neiman Marcus on the financial services industry. In the letter to the U.S. House and Senate leadership, NRF CEO Matt Shay said that financial institutions have a "critical role to play" in making sure their cards are secure.

CUNA: Target breach cost credit unions $30M Credit unions lost an estimated $25 million to $30 million as the result of the Target data security breach, according to a new survey by Credit Union National Association. The CUNA survey asked credit unions hit by the Target data breach to outline the costs and burdens they have seen as a result, according to the association. The survey showed that, on average, the breach cost credit unions about $5.10 per card affected.

Court orders judge to reconsider lobbyists' lawsuit A federal appeals court had ordered rehearing a lawsuit seeking to overturn a presidential ban that prevents lobbyists from serving on federal advisory committees. At issue is a 2012 suit filed in U.S District Court for D.C. by six lobbyists who argued the ban violated their constitutional rights because it discriminates against their profession. President Barack Obama enacted the ban in 2009 as part of an effort to dilute the influence of special interests in government.

Rosenberg named chair of manufacturing council American Cleaning Institute CEO Ernie Rosenberg has been named chairman of the National Manufacturers Association's Council of Manufacturing Associations. The council is composed of nearly 240 industry-specific manufacturing associations that provide resources and networks to members to broaden the reach of the NAM's advocacy efforts.

SIFMA outlines policy priorities Top executives at the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association briefed journalists Thursday on top priorities for 2014, including a uniform fiduciary standard of care. A rule should be "business-model neutral. It shouldn't favor the investment advisor model over the broker-dealer model," said Ira Hammerman, executive vice president and general counsel. "We believe this is doable, and we continue to push forward on this initiative."
