Edison Electric Institute President Tom Kuhn and CEOs from EEI member companies met with President Joe Biden on Wednesday to express support for climate change legislation. Other meeting participants included Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy.
"The clean energy tax policies that we discussed would allow electric companies to accelerate the clean energy transition while preserving electric reliability and affordability for the customers and communities that we serve," Kuhn said in a statement. "EEI and our member companies are well-positioned to be part of the climate change solution."
Tax incentives being considered "will create a level playing field that recognizes the role of electric companies in deploying more clean energy and will help to preserve the existing nuclear fleet, so new clean energy deployments contribute to additional emission reductions," Kuhn said.
Major electric companies represented in the meeting included Southern Company, American Electric Power, Edison International and Duke Energy.
EEI members are investor-owned electric companies that provide electricity for more than 220 million Americans and operate in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, according to EEI's website.
